Every Burn needs an effigy, and we want you to make it. The effigy burn is the focal moment of Gateway Burn. It exemplifies the shared experience of attending a Burning Man Regional Event like Gateway Burn. We all come together to create and experience something together, something fantastic, and what is more fantastic that a huge beautiful work of art created for the sole purpose of burning and through that burning, forging the bonds of community we share.
Also, it's just super-duper fantastic to see something huge go up in flames.
Bring us your ideas. If your proposal is selected it will be funded by Gateway Burn. A Budget of $250.00 has been set aside for the effigy project. More funds could be made available depending the awesomeness of the proposal, and the availability of funds.
Essentially, the same rules of funding for the GAS Art Grant process will be applied for payment. The balance of the grant will be awarded within 30 days after successful execution of the work.
Proposals will be evaluated based on the following (in no particular order):
- Quality: creativity, interactivity, thoughtfulness, originality, excitement, inspiration
- Execution: planning, feasibility, safety plan, clean-up plan, budget, past work
- Principles: reflection of the "10 Principles" of Burning Man
- Theme: how or if the work supports the Art Theme of the event
Grant winners will sign a contract stating their intent to:
- create the proposed art piece within proposed time frame,
- present the art as promised in the distribution plan,
- present copies of detailed receipts greater than or equal to the grant amount within 30 days of final grant award reimbursement,
- provide photos and a short follow-up report, as well as sign a release for publicity purposes, and
- include the phrase "Funded in part by the Gateway Burn's Gateway Art Support (GAS)" on any and all promotional materials.
The GAS Committee will review the application and notify the effigist in a timely manner.
Grants are intended to cover materials and transportation. They are not intended to cover labor costs.
Detailed receipts greater than or equal to the final grant installment amount must be submitted before the project is considers successfully executed.
Artists must provide photos and a short follow-up report, as well as sign a release for publicity purposes. Failure to do so may result in an award reduction. Do not worry, it doesn't have to be big or complex, but we need something.
We will be accepting proposals for the 2010 Gateway Burn effigy through April 24th.
